The name comes from weight driven clocks made in the 17th & 18th centuries ('true bracket clocks') that were mounted on a wall bracket to allow room for their hanging weights. Later, spring driven clocks continued to be made in the bracket style.

Longcase Clocks
Longcase clocks are tall, usually around 5 to 8 feet, freestanding pendulum driven clocks with the pendulum housed inside the main case.
These clocks usually feature decorated or carved towers (or waists of the case) and hoods or bonnets that surround the clock's face. Most longcase clocks chime on each hour or fraction of an hour.
The clockmaker William Clement is credited with design of the longcase clock in 1670.
