Early Ray Finch Winchcombe Studio Pottery Jug Winchcombe Pottery Studio Pottery Art Pottery %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Crafted by Ray Finch (1914 - 2012) at Winchcombe Pottery and dating to around the late 1930's - early 1940's is this large and very handsome earthenware jug or pitcher.

Unusual in both its size and design, this wonderful jug has been left almost entirely 'raw' and unglazed, save for a pale yellow slip flourish, painted to both the neck and handle. This piece has a rustic or primitive charm in abundance and would make a splendid receptacle for freshly cut flowers. Alternatively it displays beautifully in its own right.

It bears the crisply impressed marks for both the potter and pottery, as shown. The somewhat archaic 'RF' seal shown here, is the earliest used by Ray Finch, who, in his later years, opted to use one which is barely discernible from the standard pottery seal.

A rare find, this is a beautiful example of an early 20th century 'country' pottery jug, which draws most of its influence from the primitive slipwares of earlier centuries.....and well before Ray advanced to producing those later and celebrated wares which can be classed truly as 'studio' pots.
