Circa 1840 Dick Turpin Staffordshire Figure Early 19th Century Staffordshire Ceramic %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A rare, early 19th century, Staffordshire flatback of the English highwayman Dick Turpin on his black horse (Black Bess).

This version of Dick Turpin dates to around the 1840s, the period of the Staffordshire potteries transition from Georgian to Victorian taste and demand. Dick Turpin is modelled here in a Georgian style "round hat" rather than the later and more common models that are with a tricorn. This 19th century incarnation is close to its original shape and style, the dress (cloak and hat) and the pose along with a coloured back all put the figure to having been produced during a very short period in the 1840s, the horse also is modelled with a single free leg . As with the original 18th century model this is equally scarce.

Decoration is good, plenty of detail and use of a good palette and well decorated including a coloured back, ( the latter was phased out of flatback decoration by around 1845)

Size: Overall height - 22cms, width - 13 cms, Weight - 525 gms

Condition: For these types of figures and the nature of the pottery and its decoration it is nice to see ones that are undamaged and have only age related issues, this is so with this one, the greenery evident under the horse appears to be worn, there may be some touching up to the black and the edge of the boot and the hat are rubbed slightly. Overall, and considering its age, this is truly a well presented figure, with no damage and only minor wear.

Historical Note.
Dick Turpin (1705 - 1739) was England’s most notorious highwayman, who terrorised the nation’s travellers and became a legend in his own lifetime. Dick Turpin conjures up the essence of the bandit, roaming dangerous roads on horseback and demanding poor victims “stand and deliver”. By the time Turpin was hung in York in 1739 his fame was such that crowds of curious onlookers came to glimpse his body – the young robber was only 33 years old.
