Art Nouveau Silver Coffee Spoon, Fenton Bros, 1912
This is a very elegant Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Coffee Spoon from just before the First World War. The top of the stem has a flowing pierced flowerbud design somewhat akin to the style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who was still very active at this time. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The coffee spoon is made in Sheffield by silversmiths Fenton Brothers Ltd and dates to 1912. John Frederick Fenton and Frank Fenton formed Fenton Brothers in Sheffield in 1868. They were quickly successful and produced a wide range of silverware, becoming Fenton Brothers Ltd in 1896 and remaing in business up until the late 1930s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The coffee spoon is 11.3cm / 4.4ins long and weighs a respectable 10.7g / 0.38oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter u for 1912 and the F. Bs Ltd in a shield makers' mark for Fenton Brothers Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
