Victorian Drake Commemorative Spoon, London, 1879
This is an interesting Victorian Sterling Silver Commemorative Spoon celebrating the tercentenary of Sir Francis Drake's circumnavigation of the world between 1577 and 1580. The spoon was produced in London by the Pairpoint Brothers and dates to 1879. John & Frank Pairpoint were in business together for around 30 years between 1878 and 1908, so this would have been an early piece for their company and undoubtedly would have created interest in their work.
The shape of the spoon bowl is a replica of a Tudor style spoon. The stem is very ornate with a figure of a cherub, or possibly a mermaid, just above the bowl. The main stem is then an open barley twist surmounted by two dolphins with two Tudor figures standing on an Ionic capital. One of these is definitely Sir Francis Drake but I'm not sure who the other one is, presumably one of Drake's fellow officers on board the Golden Hind.
The spoon has interest for general spoon collectors, those interested in maritime pieces, anyone who loves the Elizabethan era or those who simply admire fine workmanship.
The spoon is presented in a Victorian silk and velvet lined box from retailers Lambert of Coventry Street, London, "Silversmiths & Jewellers to The Queen (Victoria) & to The Prince Of Wales (the future Edward VII)"
Condition is excellent and it seems likely that the spoon has never been used but kept as a commemorative item for over 140 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
This is a very substantial piece, the spoon being 19.2cm / 7.5" long and weighing a very respectable 78.4g / 2.77oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the bowl are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "D" for 1879, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JP over FP makers' mark for the Pairpoint Brothers.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery which includes cover for the value of the item.
