19th C. Dutch Silver Serving Spoon, 1893
Here we have a beautiful, high quality 19th Century Dutch 930 Silver Serving Spoon with both Dutch and English Import hallmarks. The broad bowl of the spoon has intricate chased decoration of two birds perched amidst flowers and foliage. The cast stem has a neo-classical bust in the centre with flowers above and below whilst the finial features an old silver coin mounted between pillars and flags.
The spoon was imported into England by Soloman Nathan Nyburg and assayed in London in early 1893. Soloman Nyburg specialised in importing Dutch and German silver into the UK and was active in the 1890s. Dutch silversmiths love to hide their marks in the designs of their items and we haven't been able to spot this one but the Dutch assay office was in Arnhem, so it was presumably a silversmith in that area.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the most minimal superficial surface wear. It appears that this spoon has seen little if any use in the last 130 years and has principally been kept as a decorative item. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The serving spoon is 14.5cm / 5.7ins long and 9cm / 3.5ins across the broad bowl. It weighs in at a very respectable 71.2g / 2.5oz of solid silver.
The English Import hallmarks in the bowl are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver or better, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the F stamp for Foreign, the date letter R for 1892/3 and the S.N sponsors' mark for the importer Soloman Nathan Nyburg. The Dutch marks are spread around the spoon as per their normal practice. The lion rampant above the number 1 for 934/1000 grade silver is in the bowl, defaced with a key to show that it is being exported. Unusually, there is also a 930 stamp in the bowl. The Minerva's head assay mark with the letter H for Arnhem on the helmet is stamped in the bottom of the coin and the Gothic date letter I for 1893 is halfway up the stem.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
