Offered for sale is a striking figurine of a tortoise named, Mr Alderman Ptolemy. It was issued in 1973 and modelled for Beswick by Graham Tongue. It has the back-stamps Bp-3b and was discontinued in 1997.
Mr Alderman Ptolemy was a great friend of Mr Jeremy Fisher and Sir Isaac Newton. He appears in the much loved Beatrix Potter story, "The Tale of Mr Jeremy Fisher" (1906) in which he is invited to lunch along with Sir Isaac Newton to which he brings along a string bag full of salad for his lunch. He is modeled wearing his chain of office and carrying a large string bag full of salad.
