A brief introduction to Dunhill:
This accessory was made by the world famous Dunhill organization. Originally the Dunhills were harness makers. Dunhill products have always been noted for their high quality & today antique & vintage Dunhill accessories hold their prices very well indeed, with fierce bidding at auctions for the most collectible items. The head quarters for the Dunhill brand are located in the only detached mansion in Mayfair, London. The historic Grade II listed building (Bourdon House) was first erected in 1720, more than a century before the founder Alfred Dunhill was born. In 1911, the Duke of Westminster decided to purchase Bourdon House, having lent the family’s London residence, Grosvenor House, to the government as a wartime gesture of patriotism. Situated at the heart of Mayfair and like the brand Dunhill, evokes a sense of magnificent luxurious appeal. A visit to the London Home of Alfred Dunhill is an unforgettable experience which embodies the grandeur and distinction of British heritage.
To quote Alfred Dunhill from an article he wrote in 1923 -
“My experience in the motorists’ trade has convinced me that, if one can exactly meet the desires of a good class of public, time alone is necessary to make it profitable. Compared with quality, price is relatively important.”
1907 – Alfred Dunhill retires from running the Motorities business & he opens a pipe, cigar and tobacco store among the exclusive area of gentlemen’s clubs of Duke Street, St. James’s, London SW1.
1910 – Alfred Dunhill opens a pipe factory near the store, simply because he knows that the pipes his customers are using are not good enough for Dunhill tobacco and so he embarks on production of pipes that ARE good enough.
Alfred Dunhill has built its reputation on uncompromising standards in menswear, accessories and antique jewellery / jewelry.
This case is the most superbly made unused fully hallmarked and signed authentic Art Deco Dunhill cigarette case. A fine collector's piece that is most likely to be one of a kind. Imagine the joy to find this antique - so stylish, the most exquisite French made antique assayed in Paris during the most stylish era in history and then it arrives and you see it is unused! This luxury accessory has a supremely stylish bold linear design on the lid, base and all sides which matches perfectly. This is crafted from a much higher grade of silver than sterling silver - the whole case is made from 950 silver. The lid and base both hallmarked with the centurion hallmark and the numeral '1' denoting this high grade silver. The thumb catch is so evocative of the bonnet designs on the most gorgeous automobiles of this era - the thumb catch is solid gold - 18 carats and set with the highest quality dark blue sapphire. This is indeed a piece that will be treasured by the recipient. Collectors will understand this next statement well and it does give a thrill - the case opens like it has not been opened before. Then one sees the signature 'DUNHILL PARIS' set of hallmarks, the hallmarks on the underside of the 18 carat gold thumb catch and the interior. What an interior! The two centurion hallmarks and the interior lid, sides and base all satinized and unused. This is a superbly impressive case made by the best. To say we are delighted to have this unique piece in our collection is an understatement.
This superb Dunhill cigarette case measures 10 cm X 8.5 cm & weighs 196.7 grams.
This cigarette was originally made for king size cigarettes and so it can accommodate modern cigarettes.
