Vintage Italian Silver Compact, Florence, 1935-44
This is a beautiful Vintage Italian 800 Grade Silver Powder Compact. The circular compact has a neo-classical design with the front featuring an urn of flowers on a tall slender stand surrounded by scrolling acanthus leaves and the back given over entirely to the acanthus leaf decoration. The mirror is set inside the lid with the powder compartment set inside the base. It still retains its original powder puff.
The compact was made in Firenze (Florence) by the firm of L. Cappelli & C. Orlandi who were based in Via San Agostino in Florence. They registered their mark in May 1935 and remained in business until the late 1950s / early 1960s. The mark on this compact has the fasces symbol in the middle of it which was removed in 1944, so it cannot be more recent than this and is most likely to have been made in the late 1930s before Italy entered the Second World War.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver. The compact opens and closes securely. There are a few small tears in the mesh that sits above the powder and this mesh is quite delicate. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The compact is 7.6cm / 3ins in diameter and 0.7cm / 0.27ins deep. It weighs in at 71.9g / 2.5oz.
The marks, on the clasp at the front of the compact, are a little rubbed but still ok to read. They show the 800 stamp for 800/1000 grade silver, the Italian standard at the time. Above this is the lozenge with the number 24 on the left, the fasces symbol in the middle and the FI for Firenze / Florence on the right, which is the identifying mark for L. Cappelli & C. Orlandi. The inside rims of the mirror and the powder compartment are also stamped 800.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the compact.
