Victorian Silver Sugar Tongs, Charles Boyton, 1885
This is a pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the classic Old English pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The tongs remain completely usable today or would make a nice addition to any collection.
The sugar tongs are made in London by Charles Boyton (II) and date to 1885. There were four generations of Charles Boytons, all very accomplished silversmiths, dating back to the foundation of the company in around 1825 by Charles Boyton (I). Although the firm continued after 1933 as Charles Boyton & Son Ltd, the Boyton family was no longer involved.
Condition of the tongs is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 135 years of service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tongs are 9.7cm / 3.75ins long and weigh a respectable 19.6g / 0.69oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the arms are well struck and clear to read. On one arm there are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter K for 1885 and the Queen Victoria duty mark. On the other arm is the distinctive CB in conjoined circles makers' mark for Charles Boyton (II).
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
