Victorian Silver Sauce Ladle, London, 1882
This is a fine quality Victorian Sterling Silver Sauce Ladle in the traditional Old English style with beautiful foliate engraving on both sides of the stem. The Sauce Ladle is made in London in a good gauge of silver by noted silversmiths John Aldwinckle & James Slater and dates to 1882. Aldwinckle & Slater were one of the best makers of flatware in the Victorian era and this is a fine example of their work with very good quality engraved decoration. There is no personalisation of any kind. The hallmarks at the top of the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read.
The Sauce Ladle is in very good condition with no dings or dents and has clearly been well looked after for the last 138 years. It would make an elegant piece for use on a dining table today or be a great addition to any collection. Please make sure you look at all the photos.
The ladle is 17.8cm long and weighs a respectable 69.5g of solid sterling silver.
The hallmarks are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "G" for 1882, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JA over JS makers' mark for John Aldwinckle & James Slater.
