Victorian Silver Gilt Sauce Ladle, London 1861
This is a superior quality Victorian Sterling Silver Sauce Ladle in the Onslow pattern, with its distinctive scroll top and has a beautiful gilded bowl. The Sauce Ladle is made in London in a good gauge of silver by high end silversmiths H.J. Lias & Son and dates to 1861. Henry John Lias and his son Henry John Lias Jnr were in business together from around 1849 until 1877 when the elder Henry passed away. They produced silver tableware and flatware of consistently high quality and this gilded sauce ladle is a good example of their work. There is no personalisation of any kind. The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read.
The Sauce Ladle is in very good condition with no dings or dents and only the most minimal wear and tear. It would bring a luxurious touch of elegance to any dinner table setting today or be a great addition to any collection. Please make sure you look at all the photos.
The ladle is 14cm long and weighs in at a respectable 32g of solid sterling silver.
The hallmarks are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the gothic date letter "f" for 1861, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the HL over HL makers' mark for H.J. Lias & Son.
