Victorian Large Silver Teaspoon - Hayne & Cater 1856
This is a good quality large Victorian Sterling Silver Teaspoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The spoon has an unusually arranged engraving at the top of the stem with a G above DD and a P below.
The teaspoon is made in London by silversmiths Samuel Hayne and Dudley Cater and dates to 1856. Hayne & Cater were the successors to a family business originally founded by Thomas Wallis around 1758. The firm became Hayne & Cater in 1848 and ceased trading in 1865.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just a small amount of wear on one side of the bowl as a result of 165 years of stirring cups of tea! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teaspoon is of a good size being 14.5cm / 5.7ins long and weighing a very respectable 22.5g / 0.79oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter a for 1856, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the SH over DC makers' mark for Samuel Hayne & Dudley Cater.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
