Late 18th century Welsh sycamore cawl or food bowl Late 18th century sycamore food bowl
A late 18th century Welsh sycamore cawl or food bowl in good order with attractive colour coming from a farm near Brecon. The small split would have happened early while the wood was young and seasoning. Now completely stable, it used to have a metal plate across the split to hold it steady but has long since been removed. There is all the evidence of a long life in use at the table, the wear in the bottom shows the scuffing of a spoon and knife marks. It has the elegant lines outside and still shows worn lines on the inside that came from the chisel while being turned on the pole lathe. There is also some evidence of being painted a pale colour on the outside but not underneath.
