Large Cut Glass Bowl w/ Silver Lid, German c.1890s
Here we have a very large late 19th Century Cut Glass Dressing Table Bowl or Pot with an 800 Grade Silver lid. The glass is cut in the Bohemian style whilst the silver lid is completely plain with no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The lid of the bowl is marked for silversmith Theodor Julius Gunther of Berlin and also has the retailer's mark BERNSTEIN. Theodor Gunther founded his firm around 1808 but the German state silver mark was only introduced in 1886, so the bowl must date to after this. The business was taken over by Robert Freund in the early 20th century.
Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks in the glass and just a couple of very small dings in the lid. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl is 13.5cm / 5.3ins in diameter and stands 8.2cm / 3.2ins high. The silver lid by itself weighs 87.6g / 3.1oz of solid silver and the bowl and lid combined weigh in at 558g / 19.7oz.
The rim of the lid is marked with the German crown and crescent to show that it is solid silver and stamped 800 to show that it is 800/1000 grade silver. The makers' mark is an entwined TG for Theodor Julius Gunther and there is the retail mark for BERNSTEIN.
Shipping in the UK is £8 by Royal Mail Tracked & Signed 24 Parcel Post.
