Georgian Needlework Picture. Date 1801. Sampler
This is a charming Georgian Needlework picture in silks on a fine linen cloth.
It features birds and flowers, and an inspiring little verse -
A Wake my Heart, arise my Tongue
Prepare a tuneful Voice
In God the Life of all my Joys
Aloud Will I rejoice
Mary Staples December th2 Mdccc1 (December 2nd 1801)
The work is nicely bordered and mounted in its original Frame and slip, glazed.
Good antique condition
The background cloth is discoloured with age. Some wrinkling of the surface. See photos
On the back there was an old ripped newspaper covering.
I have tried to preserve this because it is interesting in its own right. It is from the Derbyshire Advertiser April 1918 (8 months before the end of World War 1)
It features, amongst other things, knitted sports coats from 14 shillings 11 pence. You don't see many of those now!
