George V Silver Toast Rack, J Round, Chester, 1912
This is a charming small George V Sterling Silver Four Slice Toast Rack. The toast rack has a rectangular base on four ball feet and the dividers are of a round arched design with a circular finger ring handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The toast rack was made by John Round & Son and assayed in Chester in 1912. John Round established his business in 1847 in a small workshop attached to his house in Sheffield. His son Edwin joined the business and they became John Round & Son. The firm were both silversmiths and electroplaters and registered marks at the Sheffield, Chester and London assay offices. The Round family sold the business in 1874 but it continued to be known as John Round & Son Ltd until it was finally bought out by Joseph Rodgers & Sons in the 1930s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of use at the breakfast table. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack measures 7cm / 2.75ins by 4.9cm / 1.9ins and stands 8.4cm / 3.3ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 45.5g / 1.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the frame, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter M for 1912 and the distinctive J R in an oval makers' mark for John Round & Son Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the toast rack.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
