George V Silver Cigarette Case, Birmingham, 1928
Here we have a very good quality George V Sterling Silver Cigarette Case with a Gilt interior. The case is oblong with rounded corners and a curved back to fit comfortably into a pocket. It is designed to hold cigarettes in both halves. Both front and back have engine turned decoration and the cartouche on the front has the initials A H elegantly engraved on the diagonal.
The cigarette case is made in Birmingham by Clark & Sewell and dates to 1928. James Clark & John Sewell founded their firm in 1899 and specialised in high quality smoking related silverware. They remained in business up until around 1930.
Condition is very good with just a very shallow bruise to the front and a tiny ding to the top plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 90 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case measures 8cm / 3.1ins by 6cm / 2.4ins and is 1.4cm / 0.55ins deep. It weighs a very respectable 50.3g / 1.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the case are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter D for 1928 and the C & S makers' mark for Clark & Sewell.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
