George IV Silver Table Spoon, London, 1828
This is a top quality George IV Sterling Silver Table Spoon in the ever-popular Fiddle pattern. The Table Spoon is made in London in a good gauge of silver by silversmiths John, Henry & Charles Lias and dates to 1828. The Lias family were important and highly regarded London spoonmakers who produced consistently high quality flatware from around 1817 up to around 1850, although Charles was only in the partnership from 1823 to 1836 before leaving to set up on his own. In the next generation of the family, Henry John Lias was Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths Company in 1861, the highest position attainable within the ancient livery company who regulated all silversmiths and goldsmiths in the capital.
There is a letter "h" in a gothic style engraved at the top of the stem. The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and crisp and clear to read.
The Table Spoon is in very good condition with no dings or dents and only a minimal amount of wear & tear, such as you would expect of an item that is 192 years old. It is entirely suitable for modern use or would make a great addition to any collection. Please make sure you look at all the photos.
The spoon is 22.4cm long and weighs a substantial 79.6g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "n" for 1828, the George IV duty mark and the IL over HL over CL makers' mark for John, Henry & Charles Lias.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
