George III Silver Bottle Coaster, London, 1778
Here we have an elegant George III Sterling Silver Wine Bottle Coaster with a turned Mahogany base. The silver gallery has a beaded rim, vertical piercings, engraved urn motifs and a square blank cartouche. The mahogany base has a green baize cover on the underside.
The coaster was made in London in 1778 but unfortunately the makers' mark has rubbed away so we can't say who it was made by. Whoever made it was however clearly an accomplished silversmith.
Condition ix extremely good with just a few tiny dings in the bottom rim of the silver. There is no damage to the pierced gallery or the mahogany base, although the latter obviously has some wear from the many bottles that have sat on it. The green baize is wearing a little but this has to be expected after over 240 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bottle coaster is 12.2cm / 4.8ins in diameter and stands 3.1cm / 1.2ins high. It weighs 148.7g / 5.2oz but this is obviously a combination of the silver and the mahogany.
The hallmarks, on the edge of the bottom rim, are somewhat rubbed but still clear to read, with the exception of the makers' mark which is totally rubbed away. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London and the date letter c for 1778.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the coaster.
