George II Silver Tankard Jug %%alt5%%
This is a rare antique, heavy silver jug dating to 1751 with the mark of John Payne of London 1751. It is exquisitely embossed with repousee vine leaves and grapes, with a vacant rococo cartouche. Standing just over 4" inch tall (10.6cm) on a wide base and ornate handle. Nice Clear hallmarks to the base - Assayed in London 1751 (q) with an excellent weight of approximately 307g. The spout which has been later added, a common practice in early 1800's to adapt items to make them more practical is not assayed. A small stress weak spot is visible to the inside where the handle attaches, it does not threaten integrity at all and could easily be smoothed by a silversmith. A fine piece of Early Georgian Silver ware that displays beautifully and will not disappoint the most discerning of buyers.
