An original mid 17th century map of Northumberland by Johannes Blaeu (1596-1673) from the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum sive Atlas Novus, Vol. IV England and Wales first published in 1645. This is only one of 5 maps to bear his imprint (bottom towards right). It is a copper engraved map on hand laid paper with hand colouring.

Twelve coats-of-arms (top left - including three empty), an ornate title cartouche comprising two winged putti holding a banner (top right), a decorative mileage scale with a cartographer holding dividers (bottom left) with two galleons in the North Sea.

This map is from our own collection. We have mounted it below burgundy coloured board and displayed it within an expensive gilt and black frame. Unfortunately, we forgot to photograph the reverse before framing it.

Johannes Blaeu completed the atlas started by his father before the latter’s death in 1638. Following the destruction by fire of Blaeu’s printing works in 1672 no further Atlas’ were produced and a year later Johannes Blaeu died.

Condition: Very good antique condition without tears or repairs. The colouring is thought to be original as some colour from an opposing map in the atlas has transferred to this map. The frame is recent and in excellent condition. It is ready to hang.
