Fine Quality Antique English Silver Tea Caddy
A really fine quality tea caddy, one of the best I have seen for some time. Made from English sterling silver, the underside is lucky enough to have an English design registration diamond shaped lozenge, usually only seen on items of particular note. In this case this design was registered on 20th October 1883.
The caddy stands on four original bun feet and is beautifully decorated with a fluted bottom and crowned with a complimentary fluted design and in turn topped with a beautifully carved finial. The repousse decoration incorporates a vacant cartouche to the front.
The hinged lid opens to reveal a lavishly gilded interior. Fully hallmarked for London 1893, the caddy is a true Victorian example. The makers mark is also present for Horace Woodward & Co Ltd. This would have been one of the last pieces made by this silversmith's as in 1893 it was acquired by the well renowned Adie Brothers Ltd.
Excellent condition measuring 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" x 4" tall. 141.1 Grams / 4.54 Troy Ounces.
