This is a fine quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Snuff Box with a gilt interior. The snuff box is made in Birmingham by Lawrence Emanuel and dates to 1901. Lawrence Emanuel was a silversmith who specialised in small personal items for the discerning lady and gentleman. His pieces are always of very good quality and his firm was in business for 50 years from 1886 to 1936, a testament to his reputation.

The snuff box has a scalloped edge and fine quality engraving top and bottom. The initials IJ or JI are elegantly engraved in the cartouche on the top of the box. The inside of the box is gold plated. This is a high end snuff box that would make a good addition to any collection.

Condition of the box is very good with no dings or dents. The hinge works well and the lid stays in place when open and snaps shut securely. There is some wear to the gold plating in the interior and some surface scratching, which is indicative that this was a well loved and frequently used item but also one that was cared for. The snuff box is 4.8cm / 1.8" wide, 3.9cm / 1.5" deep and 1.3cm / 0.5" high. It weighs a very respectable 48.1g / 1.7oz of solid Sterling Silver and has a nice chunky feel in the hand.

The hallmarks on the inside of the box are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "b" for 1901 and the LE makers' mark for Lawrence Emanuel. In addition the inside of the lid has the lion passant for Sterling Silver and the date letter "b" for 1901.
