Cased Art Deco Silver Manicure Set, B'ham, 1930
This is a stylish Cased Art Deco Sterling Silver Handled Manicure Set. The set consists of a nail buffer, a nail file, a cuticle pusher, a nail cleaner, a pair of nail scissors and a small jar for cuticle cream or balm. The scissors and the uppers of the tools are made from steel whilst the handles and the lid of the jar are Sterling Silver with engine turned decoration.
The set was made in Birmingham by Broadway & Co and dates to 1930. Broadway & Co was founded by William Benjamin Broadway in Birmingham in 1901. The firm quickly established a reputation for good quality workmanship and produced a wide range of silverware for personal and domestic use. The company, now called Broadway Silversmiths, remains under the control of the Broadway family to this day and still uses many of the original dies and tools from the early years of the company.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver and no chips or cracks in the small glass pot. The buffer is in good usable condition. There is a little bit of give in the nail scissors and the tips have become slightly separated. The lid of the box has some water staining on it but the interior is in nice condition and the hinges and clasp are in working order. The elastic loops holding the tools have mostly perished. The buffer is 10.2cm / 4ins long, each of the tools and the scissors are 12.3cm / 4.8ins long and the pot is 3.3cm / 1.3ins in diameter and 2.5cm / 0.98ins high. Unboxed the contents weigh in at 88.6g / 3.12oz and overall the cased set weighs 349g / 12.3oz.
The hallmarks, although of necessity quite small, can be clearly read with a magnifier. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter F for 1930 and the B & Co makers' mark for Broadway & Co.
