Art Deco Silver Swizzle Stick, Continental c.1930s
This is a charming Art Deco Continental Silver Swizzle Stick. The stick is hexagonal with a ball finial and a slider to open and close the swizzle end.
Swizzle sticks first appeared at the end of the 19th century and were designed for ladies to swirl in their champagne in order to get rid of the bubbles and thus make the society ladies less likely to burp in public! By the 1920s and 1930s they were used for swirling the contents of cocktails and this has remained their purpose ever since.
There is no makers' name on the swizzle stick so we are unable to say who made it and where but it is continental in origin and dates to around the 1930s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The swizzle stick is 8cm / 3.1ins long when closed and 12cm / 4.7ins long when open. It weighs in at 4.4g / 0.15oz of solid silver.
The swizzle is simply marked SILVER just below the slider and it is almost certainly 800/1000 grade silver.
Shipping in the UK is £4.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
