Art Deco Silver Matchbook Cover, D. Bros, 1937
Here we have an elegant Art Deco Sterling Silver Matchbook Cover with engine turned decoration. The interior is gold washed and the cartouche on the front has a letter M elegantly engraved into it.
The matchbook cover is made in Birmingham by D. Brothers and dates to 1937. D. Brothers could either be the Davies Brothers or the Dingley Brothers who were both operating in Birmingham at this time and registered virtually identical makers' marks.
Matchbooks were very popular in the interwar years as their small size meant that they slipped easily and unobtrusively into a pocket or handbag for an evening out.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just a slight thinning of the gold washed interior in places. The clasp and hinge are both in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The matchbook cover measures 6cm / 2.4ins by 4.5cm / 1.8ins and it weighs in at a very respectable 34.9g / 1.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the lid are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter N for 1937 and the D.BROS makers' mark for either Davies Brothers or Dingley Brothers. In addition the base is also marked with the lion passant and the date letter N.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
