Antique silver Cyma pocket watch.
Antique silver Cyma pocket watch.
The watch has a stem-winding movement, identified as a Cyma, which is working nicely. A good 15-jewel movement signed Schwob Freres Company , La Chaux-De-Fonds. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.
Cyma was founded by two brothers, Joseph and Theodore Schwob, in 1862. In 1892 they decided to go into partnership with Frédéric Henri Sandoz, owner of Henri Sandoz et Cie. The Cyma name was officially registered in 1903. Sandoz used the most modern of manufacturing processes and produced very high quality time-pieces, trademarked as Tavannes, Cyma and Cyma Tavannes. Their excellent reputation for quality meant that by 1910, Tavannes / Cyma were one of the largest Swiss watch manufacturers in existence. State, or Stayte, was one of the brand names used by the company.
The watch measures 51mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are import marks inside the two case backs for London 1914 with the maker’s mark A.B. The case has light surface marking from use but overall it is in nice condition for an antique piece.
The movement is later than the case and has been replaced at some stage of its life.
The glass lens is in nice condition.
The dial has a small nibble to the outer edge at 9 o'clock but otherwise it is in nice condition with original gold hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.
