2 x Victorian Silver Dessert Spoons, London 1854
This is a superb quality pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Dessert Spoons. The spoons are double struck in an ornate variant of the King's shape with a rampant lion crest in the front cartouche and the initials JA in the back cartouche.
The spoons are made in London by Francis Higgins and date to 1854. Francis Higgins, a specialist spoon maker, founded his business around 1817. In the 1850s he supplied a number of very high quality exclusive designs to retailer Hunt & Roskell, a company founded by Paul Storr with premises in New Bond Street and these spoons are almost certainly one of those designs.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no wear to the tips of the spoons and only the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 165 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 17.8cm / 7ins long and the pair together weigh in at a very substantial 112.7g / 4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the bowls are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter T for 1854, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the FH makers' mark for Francis Higgins.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoons.
