Michael Thonet perfected a process of making furniture out of a combination of bent and glued wooden slats using steam, setting the tone for bentwood chairs of the future. Thonet's most popular chair being the thonet “no 14”, its design being the quintessential coffee shop chair and has been in continual production since the factory first opened in 1861.
