William Widgery 1826-93 Watercolour Lydford Gorge William Widgery 1826-1893 Watercolour %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are pleased to offer for sale, this lovely, large, oval watercolour by the highly renowned Exeter artist William Widgery, who has signed the painting centrally at the bottom. We are fairly certain that the painting depicts a view of the River Lyd, flowing through part of Lydford Gorge, as the artist owned a pied-a-terre at Lydford and we have had a painting of a his of Lydford Gorge in the past.

William Widgery, who is mostly known, incorrectly, to have been born in 1822, actually was born in North Molton, Devon in 1826, as he lists North Molton in the Census records as his birth place and he is the only William Widgery born in that place in 1826 and, in his obituary, after his death in 1893 on 25th February, it was stated that he was 67.

He was born in North Molton, the son of John Widgery and, in the Census of 1841,. he was an apprentice stone mason in North Molton living at the home of a Mr. Bawden, and, ten years later, he was a working mason with his wife Elizabeth (nee Cornelius) (1823-1909, born in Coryton, Devon, who he married in 1847, and their daughter Julia, born 1848. She became as artist and was active 1872-79

By 1861, William was living at 87 South Street in Exeter and listed as an Artist, Landscape Painter, with his wife, daughters Julia L., Mary E., born 1853, son William Henry, born 1856, and daughter Florence, born 1858.

In the 1871 Census, the family were living at 1, Park Place, Exeter, with the addition of another son Frederick John Widgery, 1861-1942,who became an artist like his father. He also became a Magistrate and the Mayor of Exeter. His son William Henry Widgery MA, although he had a brilliant academic career, was doggged by ill health and died at the young age of just 35 amd was buried at St. David's Anglican Church in Exeter.

In 1881, William and Elizabeth were living at 27 Southernhay, Exeter, with Florence and Frederick, a boarder and a servant. By 1891, William and his wife had moved to 11 Howell Road, Exeter, although when he died on 8th April 1893, the Probate Registry in London gave his residence as 20 Howell Road. Both homes appear to be in the family though, as Frederick John Widgery was living at No. 11 in 1901 and 1911, and it bears a blue plaque in his name. Probate of William's estate was given to Frederick and his assets were listed as £3,938 13s. which is worth approximately 540,000 today.

William Widgery was a much loved Devonshire artist and his funeral, according to newspaper reports at the time, was almost a public event, with five carriages of mourners, as well as many notables from his patrons in the aristocracy. He was buried at St. David's Anglican Church in Exeter on 12th April, 1893, where his son William Henry was also buried.

Although William was a self-taught artist, he honed his skills by copying old masters, as well as turning out many copies of The Monarch of the Glen before turning his developed talent to watercolours that depicted the Devonshire landscape is all its glory. He was a very successful artist and is thought to have executed some 1500 paintings during his career, although only exhibiting once. His paintings appealed tl all levels of society.

This painting has been newly double mounted in two-tone acid-free mountobard to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/4 inch deep cream and gilt frame with black outer edge. It will be supplied with new brass fittings, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
