Willem van de Velde 1633-1707 original old master Dutch artist old master Willem Van de Velde %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is an important & rare to the market original drawing by the Dutch artist Willem van de Velde the younger (1633 - 1707).
Willem van de Velde the younger was from a family of painters, brother Adriaen van de Velde (1636 - 1672) & their father, Willem van de Velde The Elder (1610 or 1611 - 1693)
Willem The younger, like his father was a marine painter.

Driven from Holland due to the political situation & the French war they came to England were they were employed by Charles II & given the use of a studio in the Queen's House at Greenwich, before later moving to Westminster in 1691
They initially produced drawings of sea battles, many of which were later 'coloured' by Van de Velde younger.

Our drawing on artist paper is a typical pen & ink with wash drawn by the artist and clearly monogrammed bottom right.
Many of these early drawings were sketched at sea and the wash added in the studio afterwards. van de Velde was understood to have an extensive knowledge of marine affairs.

It is most rare for a drawing by this artist to come to the market and those that have will have been sold by the major auction houses.
Whilst the artist family were quite prolific in their time a vast number of their works have over the years been acquired by museums around the world and are held in storage.

By repute our drawing was owned by Leslie Hand and sold at auction by the descendants. It was, again by repute offered within an auction titled 'The Leslie Hand Collection'
Whilst our research has not identified 'Leslie Hand' we did come across a Lieutenant Commander Leslie Hand who was a benefactor of marine artworks to The National Gallery. (?)
