Thomas Mortimer Fl. 1880-1920 Coastal W/Colour

We are offering for sale this large watercolour by the artist Thomas Mortimer, who flourished circa 1880-1920 and who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a coastal view of a fishing village, with boats drawn up on the beach and cliffs in the background. There is a steamship out to sea and several fishing vessels. There is a rowing boat going out to sea. It appears to be dawn. There is no inscription to the rear of the painting, as it has been mounted on card by the original framer, but we think it may be an early view of Hastings. If anyone recognises the scene, we would be grateful if they could contact us. This is one of a pair of paintings by this artist that we are currently listing.
Thomas Mortimer, who flourished around 1900, was a watercolour artist who specialised in marine and coastal paintings. He is listed in Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents' from which we quote
'Painter in watercolour of harbours, coastal scenes and continental town and lake scenes who was working around 1900. The watercolours are often beach scenes with figures and fishing boats and are usually found in pairs. The subjects include South Cost views, Dutch and French town scenes and, occasionally, Venice. This artist is sometimes confused with the 1930s West country cottage and harbour scene painter L. Mortimer, who also signs with an initial but whose signature can be difficult to read.'
Auction results for this artist may be found on the usual sites in reasonable quantity, as he was quite prolific.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/8" mottled gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
