Silver Plate Serving Dish, c.1890s - 1920s
This is a very smart late 19th or early 20th century Silver Plate Serving Dish or Entree Dish. The dish is oblong with rounded corners. It is in the Georgian Revival style with a gadrooned rim around the base and the upper panel of the lid. There are two flat handles with shell detailing. The dish can either be used as a base and cover or the lid sits flat so that it can be used as two open serving dishes.
The serving dish was made in England but is only stamped E.P.N.S A.1 and England, there is no makers' mark. After 1891 it was required to stamp items England for exporting and in the 1920s this was changed to Made In England, so we can say with confidence that this dish dates to the late 19th or early 20th century, which also fits in with the Georgian Revival style which was very popular at this time.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after a hundred or more years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The serving dish is a good size, measuring 27cm / 10.6ins by 19.5cm / 7.7ins and standing 9cm / 3.5ins high. It weighs in at 1.27kg / 44.7oz.
The underside of the base is stamped E.P.N.S. for silver plate, A.1 to show that it is the best quality silver plate and ENGLAND which dates it to between the 1890s and the 1920s.
