Monogrammed 1920s Oil On Canvas Forest Pool
This is a very attractive Oil on Canvas by a monogrammist artist, whose monogram we cannot decipher. We originally thought that it was unsigned, by discovered the monogram below the edge of the gilt slip. It possibly reads CYR, or CEY, but we cannot be sure. Therefore, we cannot identify the artist.
The painting depicts a deep pool in a dark deciduous forest. The light is falling on the trees to the right. the trunks of the treees at the edge of the forest and the pale undergrowth around the edge of the pool, but further back into the forest it is very dark. There is a hint of blue sky, but mostly white clouds.
The painting has been executed on pure cotton N rated prepared canvas by Reeves and Sons London, and we have dated the painting to the 1920s by identifying the stamp on the back of the canvas as 1920s. By the thirties the word London was in larger letters.
It has been newly framed in a 2 1/4 inchblack lacquer frame with ochre lines and has its original narrow gilt slip, which again means that the monogram is hidden.
Image size: 19 1/8 x 13 1/8 inches - 48.6cm x 33.35cm
Frame size: 23 7/8 x 17 7/8 inches - 60.75cm x 45.55cm
Medium: Oils on Reeves & Sons All Cotton N canvas
Condition: Very good. There surface is clean and taut. There is no damage, paint loss or repairs, but there is widespread craquelure. The slip ir original and the frame is new.
