Large French Silver Plate Coffee Pot, c.1890-1920
Here we have a fine quality Large French Silver Plate Coffee Pot from the late 19th / early 20th century. The coffee pot is a tall tapered cylinder with a hinged lid. The spout and the substantial wooden handle are set at right angles. Although this style of pot is often called a chocolate pot, they are actually more likely to have been used for coffee.
The coffee pot was made in France by Félix Frères and dates to between around 1890 and 1920. Félix Frères was a retailer and manufacturer founded in Toulouse, France around 1875 and based in Rue Alsace. Their marks are most often found on silver plate tableware, flatware and cutlery and their pieces are of consistently good quality.
Condition is very good with no significant plate loss and just the superficial wear and tear that you would expect after over 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The coffee pot is of a substantial size standing 27cm / 10.6ins high. It is 12cm / 4.7ins in diameter across the base, 27cm / 10.6ins from the side to the end of the handle and 16cm / 6.3ins from the spout to the side. It has a 1.5l / 2.6pts capacity and weighs 1.24kg / 43.9oz.
The underside of the base is stamped Félix Frères a Toulouse and has their two Fs either side of a hammer makers' mark, showing that it was both made and retailed by them. It also has the 35G stamp to show that it is high quality silver plate.
