This attractive 1930s watercolour depicts Higher Hodder Bridge near Chaigley and Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. The painting is signed F Cawthorn in the bottom left hand corner and is presented in a new glazed frame.

The painting excluding the frame measures approximately 8 X 12 and 1/2 inches (20cm X 32cm) and it is in a very good condition.

About the Artist

Lancashire artist Frederick Charles Cawthorne, son of Elijah Cawthorne (Artist) was born in 1877 and became active as a painter around 1901. He lived in Clitheroe and mostly painted scenes around North Yorkshire and Lancashire. He was one of only a few good artists who painted scenes in and around Pendle, the Ribble Valley, Whalley and along the River Hodder. His works are immediately recognisable, and much of the subject matter has changed very little over the past 80 - 90 years. As a consequence paintings by F Cawthorne are very popular with those who have an affiliation with the North of England.
