Good Georgian Antique Sampler George III 1813
This is a very good Georgian sampler by Jane Rushforth dated 1813 when Jane was 19 years old. The well executed sampler is substantial in size (62 cms by 50 cms including frame) and has many interesting features and religious texts. It has Adam and Eve and the serpent in the garden of Eden Christ on the cross with the verse 'Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world and there is an oak tree with lovebirds at the top, as well as angels, birds, animals, flowers and vases and urns. This is all framed by an embriodered floral entwined border with religious text above and below. The central cartouche has the text 'Favour is deceitful and beauty is vain but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised'
The fabric and stitching are in good order and appear complete, with some overall discolouration and ageing as is to be expected with the age of the piece. This is a grand example of fine work from the Georgian era. The sampler is in a solid mahogany frame which is crossbanded and line inlaid with satinwood.
