Fine Inlaid Stick Barometer - Somalvico , London
This is a fine stick barometer by Joseph Somalvico and Son dating from the Regency period. Joseph Somalvico (1) was one of the finest makers of his generation and went into partnership with his son Joseph (2) around 1820 until 1840 at 91 , Hatton Garden , Holborn , London.
Interestingly similar instruments of this type were made by Joseph senior 20 years earlier.
The mahogany veneered case has double boxwood stringing to the front and a turned cistern cover which is also inlaid . The engraved silvered scales are signed by the makers and numbered 221 with the barometer scale numbered from 27 -31 for pressure with a manual vernier which is accessed via the opening door . Adjacent is the thermometer with Fahrenheit scale.
Above the door is an adjustable hygrometer set in a panel with bat wing inlays below an architectural pediment and finial.
This is a very attractive instrument of elegant proportions which has been deliberately left in original , but fully functioning ,condition .The scales can be re-silvered and the brass polished free of charge if required by the purchaser .
This instrument is 43 inches tall , 5 inches wide at the door and 2/34 at the trunk . The maximum depth is 1 3/4 inches.
At the full asking price I will deliver and set up the barometer free of charge in England , Wales and the Scottish lowlands and provide a 2 year guarantee.
Any lesser offers that are accepted will be considered a trade sale with the item sold as described but with shipping the responsibility of the buyer
