This is a very fine Georgian bow fronted stick barometer made by Gill and Co , London circa 1790 which is in excellent condition having been fully but sympathetically restored. It is in perfect working order.
The mahogany veneer has a wonderful colour and highly figured grain which serves to highlight the silvered scales . The original cystern cover is ebonised and the bottom of the instrument has canted corners which are inlaid with ebony stringing.
The silvered and engraved scales are signed by the maker and the swan neck pediment is carved right the way to the back of the instrument.
The condition throughout is exceptional and will delight the most discerning client
The images give a reasonable depiction of the instrument but as this type of barometer are very difficult to photograph due to reflections. In the flesh the quality and finish are more apparent and I suggest that any interested parties view the item as they will certainly not be disappointed.
Bow front barometers were always very expensive and subsequently are quite rare , particularly the better examples. Even in modern times demand has always outstripped supply as they will fit into any home new or old.
This particular barometer has spent it life in Langham Hall , Norfolk which is a Grade 11 registered stately home worth several million pounds and it has only recently appeared on the open market.
The barometer is 40 long inches longand 2 1/2 wide at the centre
If the asking price is paid in full I will deliver and set up the barometer free of charge in England , Wales and the Scottish lowlands.
If a lesser offer is accepted it will be considered a trade sale with the item being sold as described and shipping the responsibility of the buyer.
I will ship this instrument worldwide but I will have to empty the tube and retain the mercury although re filling the tube is a very straightforward process.
Guesstimate shipping rates are as follows
Europe £40
USA £70
Asia and Australia £140
Please read carefully.
Due to the covid pandemic please note that shipping costs have risen considerably. Therefore I would urge you to contact me to request a shipping price
