Elkington Silver Plate Food Dome With Coat Of Arms
A large Victorian ELKINGTON Silver Plate Food Dome with armorial family crest.
This lovely old heavy silver plate food dome has two outstanding features A beautiful moulded handle featuring oak leaves and acorns, plus a fascinating family crest incorporating unicorns, moons, chevrons, a cross (St George?), plus several other elements. Underneath is the motto "STUDY QUIET" and above, another large unicorn.
We have done a little research on the armorial which appears to relate to the 'HEAD'family.
The English ancestry of the Head name stems from the county of Kent in England with numerous variants i.e. de Hede, Hide, Hithe, Hedd, Headd, & Head all of which have transitioned from the surname de Hede in 13th century England to the present spelling and particularly from Sir Richard Head, (1609 - 1689) in Kent.
HEAD Coat of Arms A black shield with three silver unicorns' heads erased.

HEAD Crest A unicorn's head.
HEAD motto "Study Quiet"
Elkington & Co. are one of the most respected manufacturers of fine quality silver plate. Founded in Birmingham in the 1840s, they are a pioneer of heavy electroplated silver.
Size L~455mm, W ~358mm, H ~280mm
Good antique condition with a few minor dings and wear commensurate with age. One small area of cracking in the plating not very noticeable, mentioned only for completeness.
