Early 20th C. Silver Plate Serving Dish, W. Hutton
This is an attractive, high quality Early 20th Century Silver Plate Serving or Entree Dish. The dish is oblong with rounded corners and beaded decoration to the rims. The handle of the lid is removable so that it can be used either as a single lidded dish or as two open dishes.
The serving dish was made in Sheffield by the renowned firm William Hutton & Sons Ltd and dates to between 1900, when they acquired the use of the cross arrows mark and 1930, when they were taken over by James Dixon & Sons. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 90 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The serving dish measures 27.3cm / 10.7ins by 20.2cm / 7.9ins and stands 11cm / 4.3ins high with the handle attached. It weighs in at 1.537kg / 54.2oz.
The marks on the underside of the dish and nice and clear to read. They show BP for silver plate, A1 to show that it is the highest grade silver plate, the Cross Arrows trade mark, acquired in 1900, and the WH & S makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons.
