Charlotte Rhead, Rare New Sylvan Pattern, c.1920s

In General
A stunning, hand painted, example of a Charlotte Rhead/Burleigh Ware, Art Deco octagonal bowl, in the rare '4123' 'New Sylvan' pattern c.1920s. This striking bowl has a tube-lined decoration of repeating trees against a polychrome background with a wonderful and very striking gold/bronze finish on the outer surface of the bowl and decorating the trees. The pattern was made using the 'squeeze bag' tube-lining method which is quite rare.
Charlotte Rhead, alongside her famous contemporaries Clarice Cliff and Susie Cooper, is regarded as one of the leading English ceramics designers of the 1920s and 1930s. Her work has become highly prized and very collectable with some of her large chargers achieving over £3,000 at auction.
Charlotte was born in 1885 in Burslem, the heart of 'the Potteries'. She is best known for her association with Burleigh Pottery where she worked as a designer from 1926 to 1931. There she trained her own team of expert hand painters who would work on her designs. Charlotte specialised in the art of tube-lined decoration. Tube-lining is the piping of a fine line of soft clay onto the body of a bowl, giving an outline for further decoration.
This is a wonderful ceramic for a collector of Charlotte Rhead's work, given its very unusual octagonal shape and its rare and highly colourful 'New Sylvan' pattern.
