Charles Russell RHA 1852-1910 Watercolour Children Charles Russell RHA 1852-1910 Scottish %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are pleased to offer this lovely watercolour, somewhat in the style of Hector Caffieri, attributed to the Irish Academician Charles Russell, as it isn't signed, but attributed to him on the mount.. The watercolour depicts a group of seven children among the rock pools and on the rocks. The artist has managed to create a great feeling of movement in his work. The girls are wearing scarves or hats and are collecting what looks like kindling in their aprons The boy n the foreground is wearing a hat. To the left, one of the girls is bending down over a pool and the girl standing also has an apron full of sticks. It is possible that they are collecting wood from a wreck after a storm.

Charles Russell was a painter in both oils and watercoloours, who started his career painting portraits from photographs in Dublin for ten years, prior to setting out on his own as a portrait painter. However, his early exhibits were landscapes. He also was responsible for a large painting of The Sermon on The Mount, as well as three murals in St. Michael's Church in Enniskillen.

Charles Russell was born on the 4th February,1852, in Dunbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland, the second son of the well known Scottish artist John Bucknell Russell (1820-1893) who specialised in oil paintings primarily of fish and game, although he was also a very skilled carver. He had two brother and five step brothers and sisters. His brother was the artist James B. Russell (1867-1958). From our research, his 3 step-sisters Isabella, Jane and Helen were all artists and his step-brother William was an art student.

He was taught by his father and also attended the RA School in Edinburgh. He moved to Dublin in 1874 and lived there for the rest of his life. He was also a talented ceramicist and exhibited pieces in the Dublin Artisan Exhibition in 1885 in the Arts & Crafts style. He was married with four children and died on 12th December 1910, with his obituary appearing in the Irish Times on the 14th December 1910.

He exhibited 1 painting at the Royal Academy, 2 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 1 in Birmingham and 86 at the Royal Hibernian Acadmey. He was elected an ARHA in 1891 and a full Academician of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1893. He is listed in the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) and the Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists by H. Mallalieu.

The painting is mounted with washlines and gold line and is framed in a 3/4 inch reeded gilt frame. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
