These are a pair of early 19th Century Antique Candlesticks both with Telescopic movement. Very heavy and well made they do not bear any hallmarks or markings, but are exceptionally well silvered. Standing c.9" inch tall extending to 11" with a base diameter of 5". They show signs of age, and I would date them c. 1800-1810 - Telescopic candlesticks were exclusively made in Sheffield England, having been invented there in 1790. Most Examples of these rare extending sticks are of a utilitarian nature, generally good quality Sheffield silver plated and were intended to throw a constant light, height being adjusted as the candle shortened, so avoiding eye strain. They have a stepped base, sleek columns are are quite striking - they need a little attention as only one of the telescopic mechanims is holding, it works but needs adjustment - the top drip tray of one is missing, but this does not detract. All in all a superb pair, which do show minor signs of wear commensurate with age and I am sure with a littel TLC in the right hands, will make a fine, high quality antique pair to grace any dinner table or period setting.
