Edwardian Silver Vesta Case, R. Chandler, 1902
This is a well made Edwardian Sterling Silver Vesta Case. The vesta is oblong and plain with a hinged lid and gilt interior. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The vesta case was made in Birmingham by silversmith Robert Chandler and dates to 1902. Robert Chandler established his business in Birmingham around 1900. He was a smallworker producing smoking accessories, small pieces of tableware and personal items. He remained in business into at least the mid-1920s.
Condition is good, with just a couple of truly tiny dings in the body plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. The hinge is in full working order and the lid snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vesta case measures 4.1cm / 1.6ins by 3.1cm / 1.2ins and weighs in at a respectable 21.8g / 0.77oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the body, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the R.C makers' mark for Robert Chandler.
