Silver Half Hunter Pocket Watch, Stauffer & Co
A very good quality, Gentleman's, Antique Sterling Silver Half Hunter Pocket Watch, in excellent condition and in working order.
This watch would have originally been retailed by the London branch of Stauffer & Co. The watch case has the importers sponsors mark "CN" for Charles Nicolet, trading as Stauffer, Son & Co, watch importers & manufacturers, Charterhouse Street, Holborn, London.
The company of Stauffer, Son & Co was founded in 1830 and had a factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. They had a subsidiary company Stauffer & Co (S&Co) in London that distributed watches to the British market. Charles Nicolet took over the company c1879.
Stauffer & Co sourced watches and movements from different sources including the highly regarded International Watch Company (IWC). These watches were stamped with the "S&Co" mark below a crown and also stamped "Peerless".
The movement serial number has been confirmed to have been supplied by IWC, the International Watch Company, Schaffhausen and dates from c1916. The movement is also stamped with the Swiss Cross alongside a Swiss patent number 55231. This patent was granted to IWC.
The good quality sterling silver case is in excellent condition. It is hallmarked with the sponsor's mark "CN" for Charles Nicolet, alongside ".925" for sterling silver, the London town import mark and date letter "d" for 1919/20. It also has the case serial number 759384. The inner cuvette similarly hallmarked. The crown and bow ring also hallmarked for sterling silver.
The very good quality movement made by the Swiss company IWC is in excellent condition and good working order. It is stem wound and lever set - the time being set by turning the winding crown after extracting the small lever located on the side of the bezel between four and five o'clock. The movement is signed with the "S&Co" mark below a crown, within an oval, also stamped "Peerless" below the serial number 636,698 and "Swiss" for Swiss made.
The white enamel dial is in good condition. It has the hours in gold Roman numerals and a sub seconds dial at six o'clock. It is complemented by a nice pair of blued steel original half hunter type hands.
The watch measures approximately 49 mm in diameter (excuding stem and bow ring). The weight is 101.3g
