Shapland & Petter Bureau retailed by Lambs of Manc
This is a wonderful example of a Shapland and Petter Oak bureau retailed by Lambs of Manchester, two of the best names in the 19th and early 20th Century.
Shapland and Petter were known to have made pieces for Goodhall, Lamb & Highway with there name being entered as a customer in the Shapland and Petter ledgers printed on page 116 of Daryl Bennett's Book "Shapland and Petter of Barnstaple".
This is a wonderful late example of the Glasgow School style by one of the best Cabinet Makers of the late 19th and early 20th Century. The combination of the leaded Hearts, the wide flat cornice and the overall style is wonderful and initially I immediately thought of George Ellwood. If you google him with Puritan Values Tony Geering has an example that has remarkable similarities.
James Lamb set up Lambs of Manchester in 1840 and became known for its quality and design with them being one of the most successful of the 19th Century retailers, designers. There designers that we know were Bruce Talbert, Charles Bevan and W. J. Etall although there factory did burn down destroying most of there records. They were synonymous for making and selling the best to the Nouveau Riche of the 19th Century. They were taken over by Goodhall, Lamb & Heighway in 1899 with James Lamb passing away in 1903.
