Nepalese Ceremonial Carved Naga Snake Stick,c1880 Nepalese Hindu Nagas %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Rare late 19th century Nepalese carved wood stick in the form of a snake,c1880. Nepalese people worship a number of serpent gods known as Nagas and there is a large Hindu festival dedicated to the deities (Nag Panchami). This is a beautifully carved representation of a snake god using the natural curves of the wood and would have been used at important ceremonies / festivals. The snakes head has been inset with bone (or animal teeth) to represent the eyes and teeth and it has a great tribal/primitive quality. The wood has taken on a lovely deep ,rich colour/patina following years of handling and use. Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact me if you would like to view the item or have any questions.
