Mouseman Bookends Mouseman Oak
Robert Thompson, ‘The Mouseman of Kilburn’, was born in 1876 and started to manufacture hand-crafted antique furniture in Yorkshire around 1919. The origins of the carved mouse are still uncertain but the trademark may have been the result of a chance remark made to Thompson while he was carving the cornice of an alter screen in a local church. According to the folklore, fellow workers commented that they were ‘as poor as church mice’ and Thompson carved a mouse on the screen as a reminder. These bookends have been carved from solid blocks of seasoned English oak and they have developed a rich nutty-brown patina. Each mouse has flat whiskers carved close to the face and no front legs evidence that they are genuine Mouseman pieces. Although it is difficult to date the bookends, each mouse has been skilfully carved with a curved tail, chiselled claws and small indented ears. A beautiful, practical and iconic English design that will grace the bookshelves for generations. Item No. 0035.
